Exciting Zoo Developments Now Underway

Visitors to the zoo over the last few weeks will be well aware that our fantastic zoo developments are finally underway. The first part of the construction work was to construct new enclosures for our otters, porcupines and meerkats, and this is nearing completion! The otters are enjoying exploring their new home and we’re just waiting for the meerkat and porcupine enclosures to have a few finishing touches and we’ll be ready to move them back in too. Our porcupines are still off show in the meantime and the meerkats can be seen via a window in the courtyard.

The second phase of our developments has now begun, with the demolition of our wooden aviary block. Whilst waiting for a fantastic new structure in its place, we’ve obviously rehoused the inhabitants; you can see some of the birds through the windows in the courtyard (behind the meerkats) and Tia our Harris Hawk, the crested pigeons, barbary doves, and golden pheasants opposite them on the other side of the courtyard.

You may also notice that we’ve started construction of a new rock hyrax enclosure, which will be situated next to the kiosk (where Ross the armadillo’s outside area used to be). Unfortunately both Ross and the rock hyrax are off show whilst these works are underway.

Our zoo remains fully accessible to the public. Any blocked pathways will be clearly signposted and disruption kept to a minimum. We’re all very excited to see what the animals think of their fantastic new homes!

Watch this space for updates and news of our grand re-opening once the construction work is finished…
